More and more importers have chosen this option.

The advantage is speed. The forwarder can keep close touch with your supplier, and keep you informed everything. When trouble happens, your local partner will solve that asap.

Making your shipping options clear is important and helps buyers make an informed decision.

Correctly specifying your shipping rates, and setting up your payment instructions to be sent automatically means the grand total is calculated and sent to the buyer when the auction is won. This saves you time and helps ensure the buyer will pay you the correct amount.

Trade Me’s courier booking service.

We now have a door-to-door courier booking service, so you can book a courier for your sold items and send it from home. It’s super cheap, simple and you can use any old packaging.

When you list an item, use our calculator to work out the cost of shipping your item. These shipping options will show on your listing. This gives you pricing for buyers to choose from based on their location so you won't have to guess costs.

Once your item’s sold, go to ‘My Trade Me’, ‘Sold items’, then hit ‘Book courier’. You can still book a courier from here, even if you didn’t use our calculator.

Enter a few details to book your courier, package the item, pop the buyer’s address and the reference number on it – and that’s it! All you’ve got to do is pop it at the door with clear pick-up instructions. We’ll send you and your buyer tracking information automatically.

If you’ve left clear pick-up instructions, you don’t need to be there when the courier arrives and you don’t need flash packaging – wrap your item in newspaper, old plastic bags or cereal boxes. As long as it’s secure and the dimensions are right, your package will be picked up and sent around the country.

Unfortunately, there are some rural addresses where couriers can’t pick up, but the vast majority of New Zealand is covered.

Free shipping is appealing to buyers, so if you can offer it, it’s a good idea to add this to your listing.

Buyers are able to filter their search results to only include listings with free shipping.

If you don’t wish to use the courier calculator you can manually enter basic shipping options. This could include standard post, Track & Trace, as well as rural options. In the main description of your listings you may also wish to include information on how quickly you can post an item after payment has been received, along with the general delivery times.

Note that you can still book a courier from your sold items if you choose to set up shipping this way.

Be prepared for multiple purchases.

You should also be prepared for the possibility of a buyer wanting to purchase several items from you. It’s a good idea to include combined shipping options or any discounts that you may offer here. A common policy that sellers use stipulates that the buyer pays the combined shipping option for the first item, and then the $0.00 shipping option on their other purchases.

Pick up options - what they each mean.

In addition to our Book a Courier service and the ability for the seller to specify paid shipping options, the seller can also choose whether to allow buyers to pick up the goods. The following options are available to sellers:

‘Buyer must pick up’ means that upon winning an auction, the buyer is required to pick up the goods in person.

The buyer should use the Q&A section prior to placing a bid to ensure that they’re able to collect the goods, as per the seller’s notes on the listing.

If the buyer is unable to collect the goods in person, then subject to the seller’s approval, the buyer may have an agent collect the goods on their behalf. Examples of acceptable agents include friends, family members, employees or professional couriers. If a time cannot be agreed upon for the agent to collect the goods, the seller may cancel the contract at their discretion.

Usually offered alongside paid shipping options, ‘Buyer can pick up’ means that the buyer has the option of picking up the goods as per the seller’s notes on the listing.

If a buyer wins an auction before reaching an agreement with the seller to pick up the goods, the seller may refuse to permit the buyer to pick up the goods at their discretion. At that point, the buyer may choose a paid shipping option, or either party may cancel the contract.

Prior to placing a bid, the buyer should indicate to the seller through the Q&A section that they intend to pick up to ensure the seller is happy.

‘No pick-ups’ means the buyer can’t pick the goods up and will need to select a paid shipping option.
